Duties:
- Interpret and apply provisions of collective bargaining agreements for state employees
- Represent individual union members on issues related to unfair labor practice charges, disciplinary hearings, statutory appeals, investigatory interviews, and other administrative hearings
- Represent individual union members and/or the Union in high level litigation, unfair labor practice charges, disciplinary hearings, statutory appeals, and arbitrations, and other administrative hearings
- Enforce the collective bargaining agreement, including filing grievances and representing clients at arbitration as needed
- Write, review, and edit briefs and other work product and correspondence
- Represent clients in investigatory interviews
- Practice regularly involves high level legal analysis and briefing
- Some travel may be required as well as evening and weekend work required on quarterly basis
- Brief client leadership on statewide or national legal issues of concern.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Licensed to practice law in California
- Minimum 5-6 years of experience as practicing attorney, specific experience in labor or employment law is preferred.
- Excellent analytical and oral and written communication skills
- Experience representing public employees preferred
- Experience developing and presenting cases before administrative bodies, Superior Court, and Appellate Courts preferred
- Experience working with California’s State Personnel Board, CalHR, and state agencies is preferred
- Arbitration experience preferred
- Ability to independently manage diverse and complex caseload
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse groups including clients, stakeholders, state agencies, client leadership, and colleagues
- Proficiency in basic Microsoft Office applications and collaborative applications such as Airtable and Google Drive
